How to Add and Manage Tax Overrides for Your Online Store

Tax overrides allow you to customize tax rates for specific locations in your online store. This guide will provide you with step-by-step instructions on how to add, edit, and delete tax overrides for various countries.

Adding a Tax Override for USA

The USA charges different tax rates at different levels – starting from a state rate and going lower to County, City and ZIP level.

Once you add a tax registration for the states in which you are registered, the Overrides section will appear.

To create an override, click on the New Override button and fill in any of the relevant fields:

  • Country – United States
  • Tax Class – This will be set to Standard.
  • States – Select any state for which you have added a tax registration. You can change the tax rate at state level or make the change at a lower level by specifying in the County, City or ZIP and the respective rates.

Click on Confirm to save the override and it will appear in the Overrides table.

The override will be used during the checkout process for the relevant orders.

Adding a Tax Override for Canada

Canada charges a country-wide tax rate but additional tax rate might apply on a provincial level for the following provinces – British Columbia, Manitoba, Quebec, Saskatchewan.

Once you add a tax registration for Canada, the Overrides section will appear.

To create an override, click on the New Override button and fill in any of the relevant fields:

  • Country – Canada
  • Tax Class – This will be set to Standard.
  • State/Province 

If you select a province, you can enter the new values for the GST/HST Rate and the PST Rate.

The Combined Tax Rate of the two will be automatically calculated and applied per province.

Click on Confirm to save the override and it will appear in the Overrides table. The override will be used during the checkout process for the relevant orders.

Adding a Tax Override for a European Union (EU) Country

Once you add a tax registration for a European Union (EU) country, the Overrides section will appear.

To create an override, click on the New Override button and fill in any of the relevant fields:

  • Country – For domestic registration, select the specific country. For a Union OSS registration, choose from all EU countries.
  • Tax Rate – Enter the desired rate.

Click on Confirm to save the override and it will appear in the Overrides table. The override will be used during the checkout process for the relevant orders.

Adding a Tax Override for the United Kingdom (UK)

Once you add a tax registration for the United Kingdom (UK), the Overrides section will appear.

To create an override, click on the New Override button and fill in any of the relevant fields:

  • Country –  UK
  • Tax Rate – Enter the desired rate.

Click on Confirm to save the override and it will appear in the Overrides table. The override will be used during the checkout process for the relevant orders.

Adding a Tax Override for Australia

Once you add a tax registration for Australia, the Overrides section will appear.

To create an override, click on the New Override button and fill in any of the relevant fields:

  • Country –  Australia
  • Tax Class – This will be set to Standard.
  • Tax Rate – Enter the desired rate.

Click on Confirm to save the override and it will appear in the Overrides table. The override will be used during the checkout process for the relevant orders.

Countries Without Predefined Rates

Once you add a tax registration for a country different than USA, Canada, EU country, Australia or UK, Australia, the Overrides section will appear.

To create an override, click on the New Override button and fill in any of the relevant fields:

  • Country 
  • States/Provinces – Choose the applicable state.
  • Non-taxable Class: Check the box to enable a rate of 0.

Click on Confirm to save the override and it will appear in the Overrides table. The override will be used during the checkout process for the relevant orders.

Managing Overrides

To edit an Override:

  1. In the Overrides table, locate the override you wish to edit.
  2. Click on Edit.
  3. Make the necessary changes in the pop-up and click on Confirm. A notification will confirm the update.

If you wish to delete an override, click Delete > Confirm.
