In September 2012 Joomla 1.5 reached the end of its life. So if you are still using Joomla 1.5 to power your web site it really is time, now, for you to upgrade to the latest version. In this video course we will be taking our existing Joomla 1.5 based web site and migrating it to the latest release of Joomla 3.
If you notice I use the word migrating and upgrading because technically at this point we will be using a programme to extract all our content from our existing Joomla 1.5 web site and import it into a brand new Joomla 3 web site. Because the two technologies are not 100% compatible. But don't worry this is a relatively simple process as long as you follow the steps outlined in this video. Before we begin we really must take a backup of your current web site. There are two ways to do this. You might have a backup component installed in your Joomla web site. If you do, log in to your Administrator and you will find it under the Components menu.
In my case it is called Akeeba Backup and I can go ahead and take a backup and download it to my computer just in case anything should go wrong. If you do not have a Joomla backup component installed in your web site your hosting control panel may offer one. In the Siteground control panel which you can access from My Accounts and click on the cPanel button. If you scroll down you will find a button called Create Backup. If you are hosted with another hosting company they probably also offer the facility to create a backup in the cPanel. and you should check there. If I select the icon you can see there is an option to download or generate a full web site backup. You should do that BEFORE you proceed any further with the following videos. .
